Builds extensions. Valid types of extensions are extconf.rb files, configure scripts and rakefiles or mkrf_conf files.
We want to use the same linker that Ruby uses, so that the linker flags from mkmf work properly.

When no argument is given and self
is not empty, removes and returns the last element:
